Open Heavens: Confused Guidance

Memory Verse: And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:18

Read:1 Corinthians 12:13-14

1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

1Co 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.

Message

A significant thing worthy of note in the story of Ahasuerus in Esther 1 is that we should beware of substances capable of influencing our emotions or decisions. What the king would not normally do, he did under the influence of wine. Alcohol has done so much harm to people today. Several individuals and families are victims of alcoholic drinks. As a result of alcohol, many families are experiencing degradation of their living standard, non payment of children's school fees, attraction to extra-marital affairs, and other vices.

Every year, drunk driving accounts for a greater percentage of accidents and deaths. You may say that is among unbelievers but what of the church? Some people secretly take alcohol arguing that it is alright to drink if you can control yourself. It is not!

“For by one spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 12:13

From this scripture, we see that it is possible to imbibe a spirit by what we drink. If you drink of the water of God's Word or the communion wine, you can through these imbibe the Holy Spirit. But if you take in alcoholic wines, you will be letting in some other spirit. Both spirits would influence or control their hosts. Both spirits will direct their hosts on the path to go. Hence, Romans 8:14 says it is the extent to which you are led by the Spirit that tells whether you are truly of God or not. Drinking communion wine or having the Holy Spirit and at the same time drinking alcohol will definitely bring clashes and confusion. This is why Ephesians 5:18 says,

“And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”

If alcohol fills you, it will provide you satanic leadership. It will create a false atmosphere and tell you what to do. If the Holy Spirit fills you, He will lead you in specific ways. If you are saved but still take liquor, there will be a clash between the Holy Spirit and the spirit inside of you. This is why many Christians who indulge in alcohol find it difficult to be led by God, except once in a while, for mercy sake. If you are still taking alcohol, you will be wasting your time expecting the leading of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not lead those who already have a spirit in charge of their lives. If you truly want the Holy Spirit to lead you, then forget the bottle and completely yield to the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, many who are led by the spirit of alcohol claim to be led by the Holy Spirit, what confusion!

Key point

If you are led by the Holy Spirit, you are a child of God. If you are influenced by the spirit of alcohol, you are of the devil. The Holy Spirit and the spirit of alcohol cannot be in you at the same time.
